“Estamos hablando de 700,000 metros cuadrados, con un total de 15 edificios, y todo ha sido construido en aproximadamente cuatro años. Después de presenciar todo el proceso en este proyecto de gran envergadura y experimentar cada fase, es cierto que se ha ejecutado de manera sorprendentemente eficiente. Aunque han surgido numerosos desafíos, en Europa hay proyectos que, a pesar de tener menor relevancia, requieren más tiempo del que hemos invertido en este proyecto,” afirmó Vigara Álvarez de Perea.
“We’re talking about 700,000 square meters, with a total of 15 buildings, and everything has been constructed in approximately four years. After witnessing the entire process in this large-scale project and going through each phase, it’s true that everything has been implemented surprisingly efficiently. Despite encountering numerous challenges, there are projects in Europe that, although less prominent, demand more time than what we've dedicated to this project,” Vigara Álvarez de Perea stated.

El arquitecto español llegó a China por primera vez en 2013 para realizar unas prácticas en Shenzhen, donde trabajó durante seis meses en el proyecto de renovación de Huaqiangbei para el estudio Zhubo Design con el reputado arquitecto Feng Guochuan (冯果川). Huaqiangbei, conocida como “la calle electrónica No.1 de China,” alberga una amplia gama de dispositivos electrónicos que impulsan e inspiran innovaciones.
The Spanish architect first arrived in China in 2013 for an internship in Shenzhen, where he worked for six months on the Huaqiangbei renovation project at Zhubo Design studio with the renowned architect Feng Guochuan (冯果川). Huaqiangbei, renowned as “China's No. 1 Electronic Street,” houses a diverse array of electronic devices that propel and inspire innovations.

“La verdad es que fue una etapa muy interesante porque durante ese periodo trabajamos en el diseño conceptual del proyecto de renovación de Huaqiangbei, junto con otros proyectos. Fue un ejercicio bastante cautivador por la complejidad y relevancia del proyecto,” recordó.
“The truth is, it was a very interesting period because during that time, we worked on the conceptual design of the Huaqiangbei renovation project, along with other projects. It was a quite fascinating exercise due to the intricate nature and significance of the project,” he recalled.

Después de ese año en China, tras las prácticas, Vigara Álvarez de Perea se trasladó a Brasil, donde trabajó durante un año. After spending a year in China for his internship, Vigara Álvarez de Perea moved to Brazil, working there for a year. Trabajó durante casi dos años en la misma empresa donde realizó sus prácticas y, a finales de 2018, se unió al estudio de arquitectura alemán KSP Engel donde centró parte de su trabajo en el desarrollo del proyecto de la segunda fase del Acelerador de Empresas Biomédicas en el distrito de Pingshan. He worked for nearly two years in the same company he interned for. In late 2018, he joined the German architectural firm KSP Engel to work on the development of Phase 2 of the Biomedical Enterprise Accelerator project in Pingshan District. The Biomedical Enterprise Accelerator project, located in Shenzhen, stands as the first green ecological park for the integration of biomedical production in China.

“Como gerente del proyecto en China, estaba ubicado aquí en la oficina de KSP Engel en Shenzhen, y el trabajo consistía en desarrollar el proyecto a la vez que realizar la coordinación con Alemania donde se encontraba Peter Feuerbach, el jefe de diseño del proyecto, con quien principalmente llevamos a cabo todo el desarrollo del mismo,” explicó el arquitecto.
“As the project manager in China, I was based here at the Shenzhen office of KSP Engel. The task involved not only developing the project but also coordinating with Germany, where Peter Feuerbach, the project’s design chief, was based. He was the main person with whom we carried out the entire project development,” the architect explained.

“Desde el inicio, la clave del proyecto básicamente fue la integración paisajística y urbanística, así como la integración peatonal; o sea, clarificar las diferentes circulaciones para facilitar la vida de las personas que estén en el campus y hacerlo más agradable. El objetivo es que la gente no entienda el campus solo como una zona de trabajo, sino que también se encuentre a gusto en ese entorno,” explicó el gerente de proyecto.
“From the outset, the project’s primary emphasis was on landscape and urban integration, coupled with pedestrian integration. The aim was to streamline various pathways, ensuring a more pleasant experience for individuals in the park. The goal is for people not only to perceive the campus as a workspace but also to feel at ease in this environment,” the project manager explained.

Frente al proyecto, se encuentra un parque de humedales que lo separa de la fase uno. Por ende, se buscó unificar ambas fases a través de las plataformas que atraviesan el parque, creando un entorno natural a través de la conexión de ambos proyectos.
In front of the project, there is a wetland park that separates it from Phase 1. Therefore, the objective was to integrate both phases through the platforms traversing the park, thus establishing a natural environment by connecting the two projects.

Another noteworthy element influencing the project's uniformity is the treatment of loading and unloading openings on the laboratory facades. Instead of using roll-up shutters that could give an industrial appearance, the decision has been made to integrate these openings into the facades. The panels located in the lobbies are operable, allowing for the mobility and transport of heavy machinery.

Considering the project’s substantial scale and relatively small team, they encountered quite a few challenges right from the start. Coordinating and managing tasks proved to be particularly demanding, as they were responsible for designing and coordinating landscaping, facade, planning, architecture, facilities, and interior aspects.

Durante el proceso de construcción, como sucede en todos los países, surgieron diversas situaciones y era necesario comprender la situación que se presentaba en cada momento. “En esta parte del proceso, fue clave también la participación el proyecto de Chen Zhaohua (陈朝华), director de diseño del proyecto por parte de la Corporación Estatal China de Construcción e Ingeniería (CSCEC, por sus siglas en inglés), la empresa constructora,” dijo.
During the construction process, as happens in all countries, various issues arose, and it was essential to comprehend the situation at each moment. “In this part of the process, the participation of Chen Zhaohua (陈朝华), the project design director from China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC), the construction company, was also crucial,” he said.

Instead, it is crucial to identify the key points. “Setting strategic boundaries and sessions is necessary. Thus, I consider communication, empathy, and understanding to be pivotal aspects in this process,” he said.

He added that the coordination carried out with the construction company and the client (Shenzhen Pingshan District Industrial Investment Service Co., Ltd.), coupled with the intention to achieve the project’s optimal results, has been pivotal for its progression.

“En general, debo decir que, al experimentar todo el proceso, uno termina entendiendo que se hace demasiado para el limitado tiempo disponible. Creo que este punto es algo que deberíamos valorar en la construcción aquí en China, lo cual no se hace en ocasiones. “In general, I must say that, going through the entire process, one comes to understand that a significant amount is accomplished within the limited available time. This aspect, I believe, is something we should value in the construction industry here in China, which is occasionally underestimated. For instance, at one point, we had approximately 1,500 workers. Organizing such a large workforce at the pace we mentioned demands efficient structure and coordination. Honestly, the project appears to maintain a considerable level of quality considering the challenging conditions it is undergoing,” Vigara Álvarez de Perea shared.

The Spanish architect also regarded working on this project as a unique and intriguing experience. As an expat with years of experience in China, he had evolved into a pivotal communication bridge in his work.

“Como extranjero y al trabajar con empresas internacionales, la experiencia acumulada resulta crucial. In this context, it acts as a pivot because, in the end, I have the perspective of an expat, together with a broader global mindset. Moreover, during the years spent in this environment, I have also gained local knowledge, an understanding of its way of thinking, and a local mindset,” Vigara Álvarez de Perea added.

“Honestamente, creo que cada vez hay más diseños interesantes. Cada vez más, se empiezan a ver numerosos proyectos de interiores, cafeterías, y demás, que incorporan elementos de composición y conceptuales muy interesantes. Me parece que las sinergias que se generan aquí en Shenzhen también se van extendiendo por otras zonas de China,” comentó.
“Frankly, I think there are more and more intriguing designs emerging. Increasingly, you come across numerous interior projects, cafes, and the like that incorporate highly interesting elements of composition and concept. It appears to me that the synergies generated here in Shenzhen are also extending to other regions of China,” he remarked.

“And it often surprises me as well because I didn't expect such recognition there. However, it indicates that something is being done successfully in this region,” he remarked.

“Siendo una ciudad nueva, no se nota mucha contaminación gracias a un sistema de transporte mayormente eléctrico. La ubicación cercana a Hong Kong facilita la comunicación con el sudeste asiático, lo cual también es muy eficiente. El hecho de que prácticamente todos en Shenzhen seamos inmigrantes contribuye a que la gente sea más abierta a comunicarse, entre otras cosas,” comentó.

Vigara Álvarez de Perea cree que Shenzhen se convertirá en una ciudad más internacional en el futuro, con un gran número de personas extranjeras estableciéndose en la ciudad y formándose generaciones de extranjeros locales. “Creo que el contexto aquí es muy favorable para cualquier extranjero que quiera venir a vivir y trabajar,” afirmó.
